Gorgeous Sacred Music for New Mothers

by Kaitlyn Clare Elizabeth Mason

Those very first few days at home, I had a lot of trouble sleeping. Childbirth brings physical discomforts, as well as an onslaught of excitement, anxiety, and overwhelming awe and joy at this new little life that is yours to love! Sleep didn’t come easily. But when I popped this gorgeous sacred music into my CD player, I felt I had entered another world – Heaven to be exact!

We brought our son home from the hospital a couple of months ago.  What a joyous occasion.  What a blessing.  What an honor.  What a privilege!

These two CDs were waiting in a small box on our doorstep when we arrived.

My husband and I began listening to this music each night as we fell asleep.  And our little newborn baby boy was soothed to sleep by these Heavenly sounds – right alongside his parents.  These are truly gorgeous lullabies!

I have been blessed to have the privilege of supporting several new Mothers in crisis situations through my work with the Mary Garden Showers ministry.  And I can say that this music would make an excellent gift at their baby showers – or at any baby shower for that matter!

Anything that can point our hearts and our minds heavenward makes a wonderful gift for those we love.

Gregorian chant is a form of sacred music.  It has a rich history and a place of honor within the Church and the celebration of the Mass.  And the Gloriae Dei Cantores choir is an outstanding ensemble, well qualified to bring this ancient music to life in our day!

Unfortunately, we cannot hear angels singing from Heaven on this earth.  The Gloriae Dei Cantores choir is a close second.

Here are my thoughts on each of these musical compilations, along with links where you can preview them.  If you’ve never heard this kind of music before, check it out!

  • The Chants of Angels (CD) – Almost a full hour of beautiful Gregorian Chant.  A compilation of songs full of rich meaning.  The accompanying pamphlet includes information about angels and includes the text of each chant in both Latin and English.

  • Josef Gabriel Rheinberger: Motets, Masses, and Hymns (CD) – Wonderful music, especially for those days when you just can’t make it to Mass!  You can still unite your heart with the sacrifice of Mass as you listen to this CD and hear the prayers unfold in beautiful melodies.  Also includes the text of each track in both Latin and English.

This music will fill your home with sweet sounds, creating a serene space in which you can freely pray and grow closer to God.  Keep it on in the background as you drift to sleep or go about your daily tasks.  Whether you’re at work, in the car, or at home, this music is sure to soothe and comfort!

Sure, kids are still going to dump their food on the floor and you’ll still  have tough moments in your day.  But it’s going to be a lot easier to stay calm with a potty training toddler or difficult teen when you’re listening to soft, sacred music!

Have a kid in college who has stepped away from their Faith?  Perhaps they’d like to listen to this music as they study.  Yes, there may be a subliminal message, but it’ll be a gentle invitation to turn back to the Church!

Each Sunday at Mass, we say to one another “peace be with you.”  Giving someone the gift of this music will help to ensure that our loved ones truly do have peace in their lives.
