Collaborating to Empower Women in Crisis Pregnancies

I decided some time ago – there is no such thing as coincidence. God has a purpose for everything He does in this world. We simply have to cooperate and be open to His will.

Our family relocated across the country a little over a year ago. So my husband was surprised one Sunday, when he recognized a family at Mass from back home. “That’s weird,” he thought. “They look exactly like the family we served with in youth group at our old church.”

As Mass went on, he realized that it was the family we served with in youth group at our old church! It was odd, too, because we weren’t even at our home parish that Sunday. We were visiting another church in our diocese.

Elena, the wife, was the first person I told when I felt called to be a Mother. I was at Catholic Heart Work Camp as a counselor. After spending time in prayer, at Mass, and at Adoration, I felt God letting me know it was time to start having children. Meanwhile, students in my small group kept asking me why I wasn’t a Mom yet. They took it upon themselves to give me the nickname “Mom.” I think God wanted to make it really obvious that it was time! I shared all of this with Elena, another counselor at the camp, and asked her to please pray for my husband and I.

So it was wonderful to see this family again at Mass, and we were all shocked to reconnect. Sure enough, they had just relocated to our area! They hadn’t even unpacked yet!

Just a few short months later, we realized that God brought us together again for another great cause. This time – empowering women in crisis pregnancies.

Elena is now a consultant for Thirty-One Gifts. You know, the fun, colorful, monogrammed totes and bags? She mentioned that it’s a very charitable organization with a passion for empowering women. Their name comes from Proverbs 31, which describes the attributes and importance of a “Virtuous Woman.”

I told her about Mary Garden Showers – that we’re a new ministry, seeking to empower women in crisis pregnancies. We believe that providing love and support through a shower assists the Mother in celebrating the joy of Motherhood and the new life God has given her. And that every life deserves a celebration!

We will host individual baby showers if the Mother is choosing to parent, and blessing showers if the Mother is choosing adoption. We take women out to set up their very own registry, then send out invites and registry links so people can shop for these Mothers from anywhere in the country! The Mother invites family and friends, we invite the Church and community, and we end up with something beautiful.

Thirty-One and Mary Garden Showers go together like peanut butter and jelly. We can’t think of a better way to empower women with bags than by providing diaper bags and other baby essentials to women experiencing crisis pregnancies.

We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Thirty-One! We’ve now set up an always open, online gift registry to provide items directly to the Mothers we shower, and 15% of the total purchase is given to the ministry as cash back. We’ve also set up a fundraiser so you can shop for yourself, family, and friends through our link, and we receive 15% of the total purchase as cash back. Check it out at!

This will enable us to serve more Mothers in crisis pregnancies, providing them with needed material resources and spiritual support.

It will enable us to bring more women and families through the doors of the Church, to show them that when God says “trust me,” He truly means it!
